C'est nicht Zen

I have finally found the teacher I have been looking for. Discovering Henry Shukman and Mountain Cloud has brought the change in my life I’ve been longng. I’ve had an interest in Buddhism since I picking up ‘Zen Life Zen Bones’ in high school. I’ve had a Buddhist practice for 40 years, having the good fortune to know, listen to, sit with a wide variety of brilliant, gifted teachers. And I never fully committing. When I heard Henry it was like all the pieces fell into place. There is so much love, compassion, intelligence and experience that he brings to his teaching, and from the other people at Mountain Cloud as well, that I feel safe, supported and am choosing to trust. His personal experiences of what the ‘ordinary mind’ does not see and the transformation that comes from being able to ‘see clearly’ are profoundly inspirational to me. His teachings for moving beyond conditioned ways of seeing are already very helpful and make their way into my daily life, as well as on the cushion. And last but not least, his superb ability to use the tool of the English language, to find just the right word, brings it all into brilliant focus. He is a joy to listen to, plus…I rather like his accent. Gratitude to David Whyte for introducing Henry to me. And to the people at Mountain Cloud who have been patient with me.

The moment I walked into Mountain Cloud, it felt like home. The space itself is incredibly welcoming and warm, simple and informal. Beautiful hand-built mud walls with straw, carved wooden beams, and many other intimate touches that connect me with those who built the place. The land is amazing, winding pathways which we walk on during retreats, with anonymous, sometimes functional land-art moments, and a flourishing garden. The people who go to Mountain Cloud are super friendly and interesting people -- can you imagine, they put a priority on going to sit and stare at the wall! But most of all what is amazing about Mountain Cloud is the teacher, Henry. He is a person. period. A person who has gone far down this pathway and can therefore help a lot of us as a guide, and who is very articulate about these things that are so hard to talk about. But he would be the first to point out, that he is no Guru or God-like figure, rather, an imperfect person just like us. That is a beautiful gift to know that, because it opens the door to each and every other regular person, to discover for themselves through their own experience, some pretty amazing stuff. I particularly love that, since Henry's background is in literature (he is also a poet and novelist), he often brings in the poetry and stories of others to help get at the mysteries of existence which so many people have thought about and experienced aspects of. The perfect teacher for me!

Whenever I need a space to come to my senses I come to Mountain Cloud to meditate. Though Zen Meditation only consists of staring at a wall there is a lot more that happens here. From the community to the teacher, from the architecture to the grounds, this place has been a great inspiration in my life.

This is a strange little place with a teacher who is an intellectual snob. How he was ever endorsed as a teacher totally escapes me. Buddha dharma has been turned into an intellectual trip with people encouraged to intellectualize and fantasize about the teachings. I would urge anyone interested in buddhist mediation to go elsewhere.
